The Magician's Daughter

By H. G. Parry

Summary: The only home Biddy can remember Hy-Brasil, an island hidden by magic. She lives on the island with her guardian, the mage Rowan. But one day when Rowan fails to return from one of his usual nightly outings, Biddy must leave Hy-Brasil and enter a strange and frightening new world. As she tries to find Rowan and fit in, she realizes that her guardian has more enemies than she thought, and that they are more dangerous than she could have ever imagined. Soon finding Rowan gets caught up in a bigger crisis that could leave the world void of magic.

My Review: I loved this book, and I really enjoyed the mix of Historical Fiction and magic. It is definitely a Young Adult book. Even thought it can get a little dark, it is still a book to read wrapped in a cozy blanket and sipping tea.

My Takeaway: This story is about Biddy, a girl who is trying to find her beloved guardian, and gets caught up in a plot to suck the magic from the world. Parents might want to be aware that the bad magic in can be dark, with birds made of bones and painful transformations into animals.

Romance: Light, mentions of an old romance, a little romantic tension and a kiss at the end.

Nudity: None.

Language: There might have been a “H*ll” or “Bloody”, but I don’t remember there being hardly any if none at all.

Alcohol/drugs/smoking: None, maybe a mention.

Violence: Mild, there are several fights scattered throughout, but the magic itself can be a little violent with transformations and such.

Darkness: Mild, the bad magic can be a little dark, like birds made of bones

Bad Messages: None.

Good Messages: Good vs. Evil, friendship, family, and forgiveness and love.
