Laddie: A True Blue Story

By Gene Stratton-Porter

Summary: The Stanton family is a large, happy family who live on a beautiful, post Civil War farm. Laddie follows the adventure of Little Sister, from spying on her sister and her beau, to visiting the fairies in the big woods. When Laddie, Little Sister’s beloved older brother, falls in love with the new mysterious English girl, she vows to do everything in her power to help her brother win her love.

My Review: Overall, I found this a fun book with a sweet, nature loving heroine and a cozy, loving family. Leon and Little Sister’s sometimes accidental, sometimes purposeful adventures made me smile, and Little Sister’s earnest love for her family was heart warming. The setting was immersive, and the writing was great. However, I did find it slow, and by the end I was just ready for it to resolve.

My Takeaway: This is a story of love, nature, and the strength of family.

Romance: Mild, marriages, love, a kiss or two, nothing is descriptive.

Language: Use of “hell” “damn”, and “bloody”.

Nudity: None.

Alcohol/drugs/smoking: Mentions of smoking.

Violence: Light, stories of Indians threatening babies, a robbery, a near shoot out.

Darkness: Light, the Pryor family has a sad secret.

Bad Messages: None.

Good Messages: Importance of love, family, and faith.
